Winterreise Winter Journey is a song cycle for voice and piano by Franz Schubert D. 911, published as Op. 89 in 1828, a setting of 24 poems by Wilhelm Müller. It is the second of Schubert's two great song cycles on Müller's poems, the earlier being Die schöne Müllerin D. 795, Op. Both were originally written for tenor voice but are frequently transposed to other vocal ranges, a precedent set by Schubert himself. The two works pose interpretative demands on listeners and performers due. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's three sets of the nearly complete songs of Schubert don't really get any better from volume to volume. His voice - his marvelous voice, the voice of German Lieder in our time - was sublime in the earliest songs of the first volume and just as sublime in the later songs of the second volume. And Fischer-Dieskau goes further, too: his Die schöne Müllerin is love, youth, spring, and death his Winterreise is love, despair, and madness without end and his Schwanengesang is almost unbearable in its endless intensity and infinite concentration

This release gives me puzzles. My copy of WCLP 602 (Schubert - Lieder) has the first HMV / Electrola label, extremely heavy vinyl and no "E" number. This suggests that it was made about 1955. So these are very early recordings. But how can there be a stereo version (Lieder Aus: "Winterreise", "Die Schöne Müllerin", "Schwanengesang")? Is it an electronic stereo? Has the catalog number 80040 been used several times?
