Mahler: Rückert-Lieder, - Um Mitternacht by Christa Ludwig & Berliner Philharmoniker & Herbert von Karajan. Listen Now . The Kindertotenlieder and Ruckert-Lieder are marvelously sung by the great Christa Ludwig. Karajan's retains his icy chill, but I don't mind. With such a compelling singer, I can't offer any complaints. Play album. Do you have any photos of this artist Add an image. Kindertotenlieder, Rückert-Lieder. 0 listeners. 1987 10 tracks. Herbert von Karajans first performance with the Berliner Philharmoniker in April 1938 was a sensation and aroused the jealousy of principal conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler, who from then on considered the young star his rival. Furtwängler died in 1954, and the direction of an America tour the year thereafter that had already been planned devolved to Karajan. After successful completion of the tour, Karajan was appointed principal conductor in 1956. It was the beginning of a new era. Mahler: Symphony No. 5 Kindertotenlieder. Gustav Mahler. Mahler selected five of Rückert's poems to set as Lieder, which he composed between 1901 and 1904. The songs are written in Mahler's late-romantic idiom, and like the texts reflect a mixture of feelings: anguish, fantasy resuscitation of the children, resignation. The final song ends in a major key and a mood of transcendence. Christa Ludwig, Berlin Philharmonic, cond. Herbert von Karajan DGG CD. Christa Ludwig, Philharmonia Orchestra, cond.
