All Directions is a 1972 album by The Temptations for the Gordy Motown label, produced by Norman Whitfield. The LP features the 1 hit Papa Was a Rollin' Stone, a twelve-minute cover of a Whitfield-produced Undisputed Truth single. Papa won three Grammy Awards in 1973: Best R&B Performance by a Group for the Temptations, Best R&B Instrumental Performance for Whitfield and arrangerconductor Paul Riser's instrumental version of Papa on the single's b-side, and Best R&B Song for Whitfield and. A monster album, the one that put them back in the spotlight and signaled that Norman Whitfield had saved the day. Damon Harris had replaced Eddie Kendricks, and there were many doubters convinced the band was finished. Instead, Whitfield revitalized them via the majestic single, Papa Was a Rollin' Stone. Despite its length, Whitfield's decision to open with an extensive, multi-layered musical suite and tease listeners was a master stroke. In All Directions - Methrone. Recorded between the '62 album Coltrane and the '64 album Crescent both with the same band, this album fills in a hole in Coltrane's studio recordings. Plus the band was coming off a two week gig at Birdland where they were blowing minds setting a new horizon in the jazz genre, so they were really together as a group. The personal stamp and vision for the album is often lacking the integrity a personally-shepherded project would have. As much as I love every album of material released under Jimi Hendrix's name, there is always a cobbled-together feel, even if the material itself is top shelf. That is not the case here. by no means. In all directions. Open project. Follow the directions wherever you are, perform them and post your images on this page. Looking forward to.
